About Me and My Mosaics About (me) Hello! My name is Paula Houseknecht. I'm a transplanted Connecticut Yankee now enjoying life in the beautiful rural paradise of northeastern Mississippi. Ever since I was a young girl, I have been an avid collector of old china, drawn to its pretty floral artwork and soft pastel palette. I used my collection in every way imaginable and still had many, many, more pieces that I couldn’t find a use for, and many chipped pieces that were just too pretty to discard. About 7 years ago, I saw an antique bureau covered with vintage china. I had never encountered anything like it, and its beauty took my breath away! I soon learned that though this art form went by many names; shard art, memoryware, pique assiette, broken china mosaics, it would be a perfect use for all my china and would allow me to surround myself daily with what I loved...old vintage china. And so began my obsession with broken china mosaics. Self taught, after thousands of hours and many pounds of china later, I never tire of the beauty of mosaics made with vintage china, and can hardly wait to begin another project before the last one is barely done.
About (my mosaics) The pieces I offer are created with the intention of becoming treasured heirlooms. With this in mind, attention to quality is given to every step of the mosaic process….from the careful selection of materials, use of correct mosaic techniques, to the final and thorough sealing for protection against moisture. All pieces are smooth without sharp edges, and all have been thoroughly sealed. I do all my own work, and each design is original and one of a kind. Unfortunately, mosaics are notoriously hard to photograph, due to their highly reflective nature. It is that glowing and glistening quality that makes china mosaics so beautiful and the quality that photos cannot capture. I have done my best to photograph each piece as accurately as possible, but I can assure you that you will be thrilled with your purchase once it arrives, as it is always much more beautiful than the photos can possibly show.
